Where Art, Coffee, and Passion Unite
In October 2021, Café Negro emerged as a vibrant addition to the culinary scene in Liberia, courtesy of its owner, Henry Montoya. With nine years of experience in the hospitality industry, and working as a barista, Montoya’s passion for coffee became the driving force behind the inception of this remarkable cafe.
The Design and Inspiration
What sets Café Negro apart is its unique concept, where art and coffee intertwine to create a captivating experience. Stepping into the café, visitors are immediately immersed in a world of caricatures and imaginative 2D elements that adorn every corner. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in the area, with a history spanning over a century, Café Negro is steeped in a fascinating tale. It is said that a renowned doctor once resided within these walls, and his legacy lives on through a hospital in Costa Rica that bears his name.

The Hosts
As you venture into Café Negro, you’ll encounter three endearing caricatures that serve as the centerpiece of its thematic design. First, there’s “La Perrita” (The Dog), who represents none other than Henry’s beloved Chihuahua, Mia. La Perrita symbolizes the main dishes and the integral role they play in the café’s kitchen. Next, we have “La Girafa” (The Giraffe), affectionately named Honey, personifying the sweet treats and confections that delight visitors at Café Negro. Lastly, there’s “El Oso Perezoso” (The Sloth), named Yodo, sometimes lovingly referred to as Yodito, representing the skilled barista and the intriguing coffee creations they offer.
The Coffee
When it comes to coffee, Café Negro proudly showcases specialty brews sourced from the Tarazu region in Costa Rica, specifically Dota brand. Grown at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, the coffee from this region boasts exceptional quality. Over 900 families work collectively on coffee plantations, with the majority of the harvest being exported while the remainder finds its way to local coffee shops in Costa Rica, including Café Negro.

The Food
Café Negro’s culinary offerings are equally exceptional, with each dish meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, the menu caters to diverse palates and preferences. Indulge in a delectable array of options, including burgers, vegetarian and keto-friendly choices, crepes, traditional empanadas, and the beloved pan de elote. However, it’s the tortillas and empanadas that have garnered the highest praise and are perennial favorites among customers.
Among the standout favorites at Café Negro is the “El Papito” wrap, a combination of potatoes, meat, salsa picante, and avocados that never fails to impress. As for beverages, Café Negro proudly serves its signature creation, “El Super Henry.” Originating from Montoya’s days as a barista, this drink features cold brew coffee, brewed over eight hours to produce one liter of pure delight. The addition of leche evaporada or evaporated milk elevates the experience, and for those seeking an extra touch of indulgence, Baileys is available as an optional addition.
Café Negro also caters to private events, providing a charming and intimate setting for baby showers, birthdays, and other special occasions.

Looking to the future, Henry Montoya envisions expanding Café Negro to additional locations, spreading the unique blend of art, coffee, and culinary excellence to even more enthusiasts. He also aspires to establish an academy dedicated to the art of coffee, serving as a barista school and nurturing a new generation of coffee connoisseurs.
Café Negro stands as a testament to Henry Montoya’s unwavering dedication, boundless creativity, and unbridled passion for coffee. It is a place where art comes alive, where the finest brews and dishes are lovingly crafted, and where every visit promises an experience that transcends the ordinary.
