If you’ve ever wondered who’s behind community betterment initiatives, organized street and beach cleanup efforts, or the events that bring people together in Playas del Coco, the answer is likely ADICOCO. This community-driven organization has been at the heart of community development in Playas del Coco for over 30 years, and its story is far from over.

Founded in 1991 by a group of visionary local leaders, the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Playas del Coco better known as ADICOCO, was born with one goal: to make Playas del Coco a better place to live. These weren’t politicians or wealthy investors. They were neighbours. They saw problems, had ideas, and wanted to act.

Back then, there was no Facebook group to rally the town. No email list to blast out meeting agendas. There were only committed voices, a lot of handwritten notes, and a deep belief that their community deserved better. That belief laid the foundation for what ADICOCO would become.

A Quiet Force Behind the Progress

ADICOCO operates as a nonprofit, officially private, but declared a public-interest organization. Its mission is simple: foster holistic growth through public participation. It connects local institutions, businesses, and residents to work on real issues, from infrastructure to culture.

Over 200 affiliated members currently form the backbone of the association. They make decisions in a General Assembly that meets 1–2 times a year. These aren’t symbolic meetings. They approve plans for community development in Playas del Coco, elect board members, and vote on regulations. It’s direct democracy in action.

What’s remarkable? Everyone who serves does so voluntarily and unpaid. Because real change, as ADICOCO proves, doesn’t always come with a paycheque. It comes with purpose.

ADICOCO’s track record is filled with tangible results. From securing improvements to local infrastructure and supporting community events, to acting as a liaison with government agencies, ADICOCO has played a vital role in bridging the gap between what the town needs and how to get it done. Its continued success depends on strong community involvement.

Building Bridges Between Locals and Expats

As Playas del Coco grows, so does its diversity. Tourists turn into residents. Expats become part of the social fabric. But there’s still a gap between many newcomers and local initiatives. This is where ADICOCO becomes even more relevant.

Community development in Playas del Coco doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It needs people from all walks of life to get involved. If you live here, you belong in the conversation. Whether you’ve been here for a month or a decade, your presence matters. And ADICOCO is the space to turn presence into participation.

To have a voice, you need to be affiliated. That means showing proof of residency and attending a General Assembly. Once affiliated, you can vote, propose initiatives, and stay updated on decisions. Not affiliated yet? You can still attend the general assembly and observe. Everyone has a role to play.

ADICOCO provides updates via email and on its Facebook page. Meeting times, agendas, and outcomes are public. Anyone can request this information via email at infoadicoco@gmail.com or by calling +506 2670-1868, Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm.

Why It Matters More Than Ever

The town is at a turning point. More people are coming. New businesses are opening. The infrastructure is being tested. It’s no longer about maintaining what we have, it’s about preparing for what’s next. And that’s where you come in.

Imagine a community where the sidewalks are cleaner, the events more inclusive, the safety better, and the culture stronger. Now imagine that this doesn’t depend on a politician or an investor but on you.

If you love and support community development in Playas del Coco, show up. Ask questions. Join a meeting. Support a project. Become affiliated. The work of ADICOCO isn’t glamorous but it is vital. It’s not loud but it is powerful.

Let’s not wait for someone else to build the future of our town. Let’s build it together.

“Una comunidad unida, es una comunidad que avanza.”
