Running Events in Playas del Coco I’ve been to so far

On Sunday, July 13, I joined one of the most exciting running events in Playas del Coco, the Onda Move Club at Ultrafit Training Club. What I expected to be a casual community jog turned out to be one of the most energizing and welcoming mornings I’ve had in a long time.

Tatiana and I arrived at Ultrafit by 7 AM, and the place was already buzzing. The parking lot was packed, and cars were lined up along the road for blocks. Music was pumping through the speakers, and everywhere I looked, people of all ages — kids, teens, adults — were getting ready to run. It was clear this wasn’t just another workout. This was something bigger. This was one of those running events in Playas del Coco that makes you want to come back again and again.

We gathered for a massive group photo before the warm-up, which was led by Roy Bragg. His energy set the tone for the day. We stretched, mobilized our joints, worked our calves and hamstrings, and wrapped up the warm-up with jumping jacks and high knees.

The organizers had something for everyone: 2.5K, 5K, and 7.5K routes, each with its own pacer. I chose the 5K. As we set off, the energy was electric. The main road into Playas del Coco was filled with runners, walkers, and cheerleaders. Everyone moved at their own pace. Some were seasoned runners in gear, others were first-timers wearing smiles and enthusiasm. Everyone encouraged each other, high-fives, cheers, waves.

This, I realized, is what makes running events in Playas del Coco so special. They’re not about competition. They’re about showing up.

At one point during the final kilometer, a woman stood at the side of the road holding a flag and cheering us on. It gave me the last push I needed. I finished my 5K in 29:52 and burned 485 calories according to my watch. But honestly, it wasn’t the time that mattered. It was how I felt: uplifted, welcomed, and part of something.

Back at Ultrafit, Coach Jonathan was at the finish line, greeting everyone with high-fives and encouragement. Refreshments were waiting, and the cold plunge was calling. But the best surprise? The event wasn’t over.

People hung around, sweaty, smiling, and full of good vibes. The music kept the momentum alive. Roy, with his megaphone in hand, kicked off the next round: fitness games.

There were three challenges:

  1. Team burpees and tic-tac-toe shuttle runs
  2. Hang hold
  3. Plank hold — a tense, exciting showdown between a young man and a child who both held their planks for over 5 minutes. The crowd was electric. The kid nearly won, and I swear, everyone was rooting for him.

Some participants relaxed at the café, grabbed food, and soaked in the vibe. The space was alive, inclusive, and open to everyone — no matter your age, fitness level, or background. Families, couples, solo runners, and friends — we were all in it together.

The final activity was a “Flex and Flow” session led by Kristina. Though we didn’t stay for the entire session, the energy was still buzzing as we left. On the drive back, Tatiana, who ran her very first 5K couldn’t stop smiling. We were tired, but it was the good kind of tired. The kind that makes you want to do it all again.

I’ve been to a lot of fitness events, but few have felt as open, warm, and meaningful as this. The Onda Move Club is leading the charge in creating running events in Playas del Coco that do more than move your body, they move your heart.

So if you’re in the area, whether you’re a runner, a walker, or someone just curious to join a great community, don’t miss the next one. These are more than just runs. They’re celebrations of movement, joy, and community.
